Can biochar help save Sonoma County from climate change

Sonoma County has one of the most progressive climate action plans in the country, and is looked to as a leader on climate issues. Biochar could help play a goal in meeting the County’s aggressive climate goals. Sonoma is potentially well-suited for biochar: there is an abundance of waste biomass (in excess of 1 million tons per year) and more than 50,000 acres of high value wine grapes that might benefit from soil amendments. However, there remain considerable obstacles to the widespread application of biochar locally. This presentation attempts to contextualize biochar’s role in Sonoma County climate policy.
