The continuous flash pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass under atmospheric and vacuum conditions (0.25 atm) has been studied in the 400-500 ºC range in a bench-scale plant provided with a conical spouted bed reactor (CSBR). The conical spouted bed reactor is an alternative to fluidized beds and performs well for biomass flash pyrolysis. The vigorous particle cyclic movement allows handling particles of irregular texture, fines, sticky solids and those with a wide size distribution. This movement avoids agglomeration problems and contributes to a high heating rate and high heat and mass transfer rates between phases. This technology allows continuous operation, as char is continuously removed from the reactor.
